Mobile App Critique

Google Maps is a web-based mapping service that provides information about geographical locations and directions. I have divided the categories of this discussion by usability, design, functionality, and recommended improvements.

Google Maps' Usability

The usability of Google Maps is great honestly, you are able to download it on any android or iPhone device. The app recognizes the address so easily even if you type in the address wrong. Most of the time it will auto correct exactly what it is you're looking for so for anyone that uses it, there wouldn't necessarily be any issues. I like the usability better than Apple Maps' because unlike Apple Maps', Google Maps runs a lot faster and can catch up with your location when driving.

Google Maps' Design

The design of Google Maps is great because everything is visible inside of the app and all of the landmarks, roads, and alerts can be easily seen. I've never had an issue with Google Maps to the extent that I disliked the design of not only the inside of the app but also how easily recognizable it is compared to all other apps that are made for navigation.

Google Maps' Functionality

The functionality of Google Maps is also great as it allows you to set notifications for when traffic is high while driving, alerts you when police vehicles are reading peoples' speed, and also lets you search along your route to one location how close another preferred location is. It even tells you how much more time will be added to your arrival time because of that deviation and recalculates as soon as you choose to go there. There's even a function in the app that lets you save the routes to your offline maps from your preferred location and lets you travel offline which improves safety of travel as you may be trying to travel while your phone is on airplane method as to not have any distractions while driving.

Google Maps' 3 Recommended Improvements

  1. The first improvement that I would recommend is showing what side of the road the next turn will be once you make the intended turn you're about to make. For me this would provide more predictability as to which side of the road I should be focused on getting on if I have never drove around a particular area before.
  2. The second improvement that I would like is if the app could exit out of the navigation once I arrive at the destination as sometimes once I have arrived somewhere safely, while it may say that I have arrived, it also runs in the background even after arriving and my phone then comes close to dying each time because its still running the navigation app.
  3. The third improvement is I wish the app would remember the routes I continuously take and save them automatically. I know that you can do that yourself but it would be much easier if it could remember on its own since I have to go so many places throughout the week.
